At the beginning of October 2020, as we were heading into another lockdown, I took my meditation practice into an ancient woodland by a river in Dartmoor and listened to sounds. Sitting by the river listening to the movement, watching and hearing its shape, its breathing body, my sphere of awareness started to expand. Whilst tending to the uncertainty that came with further pandemic changes, I noticed the simple beauty of nature, of being present in my inner and outer landscapes, and alongside this river-stream of awareness I was cultivating enjoyment and a sense of play.

In that first sitting kingfishers glittered turquoise, dipper birds bobbed on the river’s tideline, the autumn gold shimmered, beech trees revealed purple hues, the river spoke.

I returned with my sketchbook and materials each week over the autumn into winter, and created the “The Winter Series”.

Self-Compassion is another phrase for unconditional love. When we create art from our heart, give some space to flow and play, something special happens, it nourishes what is meaningful to us and brings us home.
