The Quiet Turning
As the year turns, I enjoy the quiet and slower pace it brings, taking time to see the Winter’s jewels. The light strobes through the mist, crisp fresh air on my skin, and birds of prey on bare branches give seasonal moments of joy. Last year, in early summer, I found a beautiful stretch of woodland near a river in Dartmoor National Park.
Amongst lockdown, I took slow swims in the in black earthy water, gentle walks by the river and mindful sits, listening to the sounds of the natural environment, the river in all its directions. I had went back to the river with my art basket, inks and sketch pad, and painted how I heard the river, it’s breathing body. This woodland is alive with diverse wildlife, with regular sightings of Kingfishers and Dipper birds at the river’s edge, and Tawny Owls asleep in the treetops.
With the challenges of our uncertain world, my time in the woodland was becoming a nurturing a space for my creativity, words and images had space to emerge, like the river flowing they kept moving too finding their way onto the page.
Experiencing calm, enjoyment and play is everyone’s birthright. For me, spending time in the natural environment, creating art in nature and bringing this back to the studio, renews my wellbeing and nourishes me like a good broth.
